J1 nose brace: drag vs rigidity

After adding a thin aluminum nose brace to the J1, leading-edge deflection dropped from about 5 mm to about 2 mm at 110 km/h, but coastdown tests and CFD both showed roughly a 3% Cd increase. Has anyone found a brace geometry or placement that preserves stiffness without tripping the boundary layer along the lower fairing?
